Bio

Andrea Barba, born in Germany in 1990 to Mexican parents, is a creative, multidisciplinary artist specializing in costume and stage design. Deeply rooted in her Latin American heritage, she expresses a strong visual language and cultural sensibility in her work. She studied fashion design in Mexico, England, and Germany—an educational path that continues to shape her international perspective and diverse aesthetic influences.

Her costume designs have appeared in numerous theatre productions, including Beautiful Things by Babett Grube, SUITS by Kwame Osei, Johanna – Stell dir vor, es ist Krieg und keiner geht hin*, and Iphigenie – Eine Heimsuchung by Miriam Ibrahim. As a set and costume designer, she has collaborated repeatedly with Theater Oberhausen, contributing to productions such as the mobile piece Wenn Lisa wütend ist and the children’s production Swimmy by the Urban Arts Ensemble.

A central focus of her artistic practice lies in exploring the connection between art and cultural identity. For several years, she has organized and designed the annual Día de los Muertos exhibition at Theater Oberhausen, which reached its seventh edition in 2024. In 2025, she also created an Ofrenda for the Día de los Muertos at the LWL Museum of Archaeology and Culture in Herne as part of the exhibition Mahlzeit!. She gained her first directing experience with the text Unter uns Bäumen for the Late-Night series Nachtdienst.

Since 2017, Andrea Barba has been working continuously with the dance collective performing:group, designing productions such as Spectacular Failures, Reverse Piece, Nowhere Man, and Synapsen, the latter of which won the Cologne Youth Theatre Award. She also created the costumes for Reut Shemesh’s dance works Bad Mothers and Electras.

With a refined sense for aesthetics, space, and cultural narratives, Andrea Barba creates interdisciplinary works that oscillate between theatre, performance, and visual art.
